Product: Abaqus/CAE
Benefits: You can now create a bead optimization that stiffens a shell model by creating beads without adding mass to the structure.
Description: In addition to topology, shape, and sizing optimization, you can now create a bead optimization. Bead optimization is applied to shell parts and produces stiffening beads that can be incorporated at low cost into the stamping process without adding weight to the model. Bead optimization determines the optimum bead location and orientation and is best suited for regions that are in pure bending or a bending mode. The introduction of a bead increases the moment of inertia, which leads to greater stiffness and an increase in the eigenfrequencies.
Bead optimization supports two algorithms—the general algorithm, which is more flexible and can be applied to most problems but does not generate a distinct bead pattern, and the condition-based algorithm, which is more efficient at creating beads but has limited capabilities. Figure 3–1 shows the von Mises stress in a plate that is fixed at the edges and has a pressure load applied to the center. The image on the left shows the original configuration. The image on the right shows how condition-based bead optimization has introduced stiffening beads and significantly reduced the stresses across the plate.
